Should You Record on Zoom or Your Phone?

We see a lot of people in business groups asking if they should record their course content or other videos for their business on zoom or their phone, so we decided to do a comparison to show you why we always recommend using your phone.

For starters, most built-in webcams are not as good as your phone camera, and the same goes for the microphone. On top of that, when you record on Zoom, the software downgrades the quality of both the video and the audio.

Take a look at this video to see what we’re talking about, and please let us know in the comments if you have any questions or if you disagree. This is just what we’ve seen with our own equipment and with our clients, so if you have a different experience we’d love to hear about it!

Recording Notes

We recorded the Zoom portion of this test on Zoom using our laptop and built-in webcam and microphone. We recorded the phone portion on a Pixel 6 phone.

The lighting was our regular overhead light. We didn’t use any other microphones, lights, or other equipment, and no color-correction or other effects was done. The only editing was to clip the recordings to start and end at the same time.
